Arie looked deeply into her eyes and Tamea knew what she wanted her to do. Tamea took Arie to the bench, placed her comfortably, then Tamea fell into the memory with a kaleidoscope point of view, which she was used to when she had shared visions with Boma. She was looking down from a tall tree into a defile with mountains on both sides. From here she could see one large army, with a scattering of skirmishes going on from within the encampment. Arie glided into a turn to view the opposite direction where Laie’s army should have been and saw nothing.
Their point of view changed and Arie sat in a small tree inside the enemy’s encampment. She was watching a skirmish with several fighters being handled badly by another group. Arie made a sweep as low as she could to these abused fighters, passing them several times before the group began to take notice of the hawk. On the last pass, Tamea got a good look at the fighters’ faces, because they had also taken notice of Arie’s actions. These weren’t Bengal’s fighters; they were women fighters from Laie. Tamea had recognized two of these women and knew they were officers among the group they sent to the border with Colonel Lauder.
Arie’s point of view changed again as she was sweeping the encampment until she recognized a few of Laie’s emblems on a scattering of tents among the many. Tamea could make out the larger command tent as Arie glided over to its location. She landed on a rock next to that tent and waited to hear or see something. When she did, Tamea almost fell out of the vision from the shock. Colonel Lauder came out of the officers’ tent smiling and shaking hands with an officer who appeared to be of high rank and had Bengal’s symbols on his uniform.
Arie’s vision changed yet again; it was near dusk when she swept by the women she had seen earlier whom she recognized. When she flew by this time one of the fighters got to her feet and screamed at Arie, “Tamea, tell Tamea we have been handed over to Bengal by the Colonel! We have been led into their hands!” The woman suddenly crumpled over. Arie went back around to get any more information and this was where Arie took the hit. She fell out of the sky onto a nearby rock. The arrow had pierced her side, but left her wing in tact. The bird swiveled its head and saw its attacker; it was Colonel Lauder. He was an ace archer in Laie’s army, but now he had defected; with the next arrow the colonel took aim at Laie’s informant and struck true. The woman crumpled for the last time.
Tamea received the next vision in absolute darkness and was snapped out of the sharing with a jolt. Arie still lay upon the bench next to Tamea, but their last shared memory was of the bird's death.
